about

my story

Artemis Tannatt is a photographer lost in the world of fantasy. Artemis grew up in North Andover Massachusetts and moved to Maine in the chaotic year of 2020. Their photography depicts aspects of fantastical stories they grew up with, hoping to find others who share their joy in these stories. They tend to dwell in the fantasy realm even when they are not working on their photographs. When not focusing on art, Tannatt can be found curled up with their dog Beans, diving into a variety of fantasy worlds. Books, video games, and cosplay are aspects in which they get their fuel for the need for fantasy. Tannatt graduates in the spring of 2026 with their Bachelor's Degree in Photography from Maine College of Art & Design. Taking a step outside the fantasyworld, they like to hike the Maine forests in search of backdrops for their photographic storybook.

Artist Statement

My parents read me stories to sleep when I was a child. Hearing these stories took me away from the everyday and led me to a different place, ones of fantasy and escape. Bringing my thoughts to life, I create photographs that include a constellation cloak for a sorcerer I sewed by hand,or a deserted western world that I traversed.

Costuming is an important aspect of the photograph. I plan what the subject wears from head to toe, making sure every article of clothing matches the stories I envisioned. The landscape is another aspect, scouting out locations before each shoot to make sure I know exactly where I want my subject to be within them. The methods of lighting each scene vary depending on the landscape. Sometimes relying on artificial light to set the scene, other times the sun is the lighting source. The scene of my photograph requires all this, living up to these stories of other realms with magic. Everything going into the photograph is something I take pride in. It is an obsessive process for myself that drives my waking and dreaming worlds. Digital photography is an accessible medium for my work. It allows me to capture what I envision and shows me how it will look to those not standing behind the camera.
